Mitch graduated from Iowa State University with a B. A. in Political Science and commissioned into the Marine Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant in the summer of 2010. After his initial yearlong training period, Mitch was assigned to 1st Combat Engineer Battalion in Camp Pendleton, CA. Upon his arrival in California in September 2011, he immediately deployed to join Regimental Combat Team 5 in Afghanistan. Following his return from deployment, Mitch was assigned as a platoon commander of Combat Engineers and again deployed to Afghanistan with 1st Battalion, 9th Marines. Mitch left active duty after his initial contract in the summer of 2014 but remained in the reserves as a Civil Affairs Marine while being employed as a project engineer at a construction firm. Mitch is currently on active orders in Germany before beginning his graduate education at the Fletcher School at Tufts University and the Carroll School at Boston College in the fall of 2016.
