Biography

Taylor Mauney was born in Daytona Beach, FL and raised in Louisville, KY. In high school, Taylor was a varsity athlete in Lacrosse and was a member of the school’s advanced program. After high school he went to Indiana University but quickly left to enlist in the Marine Corps as an Infantryman. In 2010, Taylor was deployed to the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. During this deployment he was wounded by an enemy bomb blast causing him to sustain a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). While recovering Taylor was promoted to the billet of squad leader and redeployed to Libya in support of Operation Odyssey Dawn during the Arab Spring uprising. In 2011, Taylor was selected to become an officer and attend the Naval Academy Preparatory School. Quickly memory issues were discovered and he was medically disqualified. In a fortunate turn of events he met a Marine Corps General who sent him to a TBI clinic at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center at Bethesda and he was able to rehabilitate his injury enough to be allowed back into the Naval Academy. However, entering his junior year the doctors made the decision Taylor could not be commissioned and he was subsequently medically retired from the military. Shortly thereafter he enrolled at the George Washington University and Northern Virginia Community College. While at NVCC he received an email about applying for a veteran’s scholarship through the Posse Foundation. Through a rigorous application process Taylor was chosen as one of ten veterans to receive a full scholarship to Dartmouth College. Currently, he is pursuing a major in International Affairs.
