Max enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2006, shortly after graduating from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in history. He served as an Arabic linguist for five years, deploying to Iraq with the 504th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade in 2009. After leaving the Army in 2011, Max began a career in journalism. He has been a reporter and editor in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East, most recently working on the foreign desk of the Washington Post. He received an M.S. degree from Columbia Journalism School in 2013. Max currently works in communications at HIAS, a refugee resettlement and advocacy agency, and will attend Georgetown University Law Center starting in August 2021.
